Australian republican debate 1999 - and the medias role

Australian republican debate 1999 - and the medias role The Australian media played a huge role in providing information to the Australian public during the republic debate that waged before the referendum in November 1999. By focusing on certain issues and particular people and failing to give the Australian public information on all of the issues of the debate, the Australian media helped sway the publics' opinion and therefore the out come of the referendum.During the constitution convention held in 1998 people representing many different groups concerned with the republic debate argued the main issues of this matter, and eventually came up with the blueprint of the proposed republic debate to be voted on by the people of Australia. The main issues that were discussed during the constitution convention were; the nomination and election of the president and the procedure that would be employed for this, the dismissal procedure of the president, the definition of powers the president would hold and the changes that would be made to the c onstitution and preamble.Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke in the Pentago...Out of these issues the Australian media focused mainly on the nomination and election procedure of the president and the powers the president would hold. These issues were not only seen as newsworthy because of their importance to the republic debate, but because of the emotions and controversy they held. The issues were sensationalised as the major lobbying groups of the republic debate struggled to persuade the people of Australia on how to vote. The most controversial issue of the time was that of the election procedure of the president. The division between the direct election supporters and the indirect election supporters was debated in the morning newspapers, on the daytime radio and on the nightly news. The reason this argument was so sensationalised in the Australian media was that it split party lines. The republic...

The Basic Characteristics of Effective Writing

The Basic Characteristics of Effective Writing Experiences in school leave some people with the impression that good writing simply means writing that contains no bad mistakes - that is, no errors of grammar, punctuation  or spelling. In fact, good writing is much more than just correct writing. Its writing that responds to the interests and needs of the readers and reflects  the writers personality and individuality. Basic Characteristics of Effective Writing Good writing has a clearly defined purpose. It makes a definite point. It supports that point with specific information. The information is clearly connected and arranged. The words are appropriate, and the sentences are concise, emphatic, and correct. Good writing is the result of a lot of practice and hard work. This fact should encourage you: it means that the ability to write well is not a gift that some people are born with, not a privilege extended to only a few. If youre willing to work, you can improve your writing. Most professional writers - those people who make writing look easy - will be the first ones to tell you that often its not easy at all: There is no rule on how to write. Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly: sometimes its like drilling rock and then blasting it out with charges.(Ernest Hemingway)If I have anything to say to young writers, its stop thinking of writing as art. Think of it as work. Its hard physical work. You keep saying, No, thats wrong, I can do it better.(Paddy Chayefsky, interviewed by John Brady in  The Craft of the Screenwriter. Simon Schuster, 1981)One is never happy. If a writer is too happy with his writing, something is wrong with him. A real writer always feels as if he hasnt done enough. This is the reason he has the ambition to  rewrite, to publish things, and so on. The bad writers are very happy with what they do. They always seem surprised about how good they are. I would say that a real writer sees that he missed a lot of opportunities.(Isaac Bashevis Singer, quoted by Valerie Wells in Isaac B. Singer on Writing, Life, Love and Death. [Miami]  Sun-Sentinel, August 4, 1991) Writing is just work - theres no secret. If you dictate or use a pen or type or write with your toes - its still just work.(Sinclair Lewis) Dont be discouraged by the thought that writing rarely comes easily to anyone. Instead, keep in mind that regular practice will make you a better writer. As you sharpen your skills, youll gain confidence and enjoy writing more than you did before.

Republicans stand on Stem Cell Vindication Essay

Republicans stand on Stem Cell Vindication - Essay Example Earlier the leaders could easily maintain a fake impression with the people. But with today’s media and online facilities, thee public is more than aware and are able to know the in depth truth and hence there is less chance of making false pretences. Nowadays, Democrats have to prove – â€Å"Government by the People† and republicans â€Å"Government based on laws†. Peoples choice of democrats or the republicans changes instantly with various issues. A human mind is fast changing and a real leader needs to maintain a homeostasis of the things he does to maintain his stance in the minds of people. That is why politics is a tough job. No democrat can be convinced of republican thoughts or vice versa as Laurence J.Peter says - â€Å"A Man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still† – A leader still can’t be so sure of his republican/ democratic ideology can surely fulfill people’s wishes. He does it solely on the hope though he would have a bit of confidence too, as Martin Luther said, â€Å"everything that is done in the world is done by hope† Maybe someone be a democratic or republican, it is his ideology which makes him win and rule over. But still a democrat runs on the ideal of government by the people, of the people and for the people. So he amends laws, bends rules for the people, whereas a republican has laws, human laws as his ideals which are on a global perspective common to all humans. A democrat may bend rules in his country for his people’s sake, but a republican has human ethics as a background of his ideals. So republican is more global in his thought and leads the country to a more civilized environment. Definitely not, a better and good democrat can bring up a better environment with his ideals too. This marks the success of a leader, may be a democrat or a republican.

Pay day loan companies should be subject to more regulation Assignment

Pay day loan companies should be subject to more regulation - Assignment Example Vega (2014) argues the loans offered range from  £100 to  £1000 and this is offered for a period of few weeks or months. However, these lenders face a lot of criticism. This is because lots of people argue that they lend money irresponsibly and charge very high interest rates to individuals (Bonnette, 2005). This is unlike the traditional lenders who required lots of details so as to lend money to their clients. In light to this argument, this essay shall attempt to evaluate if the pay day lenders should have their businesses regulated or not. As seen in the work of Vega (2014), pay day lenders subject their borrowers to misery. This is from the verity that they ask for very high interest rates to desperate individuals who wish to sort out their financial issues with immediacy. One would argue that these pay day lenders are simply on the move to make huge amounts of profit by frustrating poor individuals who lack better alternatives to their present situations. In fact, the Perry (2011) and Cresswell (2009) refer to the pay day lenders as the worst offenders that the society can breed. However, the pay day lenders defend their mission by arguing that they save situations that cannot get assistance from the traditional lenders (Vega 2014; Jefferson, 2012.). They also argue that their services are better as they prevent borrowers from yearly interest rates that are high and may rise to 400% (Vega, 2014). The most interesting part, though, is that more and more people are caught up with this system with the day. Pay day loan companies should be regulated by the government as they offer extremely high interest rates to their clients. As argued by Cackley (2011) in an event that the pay day companies are regulated, it will be easy for regulation to take place as the government will ask for a clear range of the interest rates payable by the clients. This means that the pay day companies will only deal with persons can

Importance Of Values Essay Example for Free

Importance Of Values Essay Importance of Values 1. Values are guides for our behaviour. 2. It is signi? cant to our life and the society in general. 3. It gives direc? on to our lives. Its value are clear and consistent. 4. Values tell us the importance of people. What things are desirable and sa? sfying. 5. Values are principle by which individuals are guided on their proper behaviour in a society. 6. Values have something to do with the total forma? on of a person. 7. Value mean whatever is actually prized, esteemed, desired, approved, or enjoyed by anyone at a ? me. 8. Values allow the members of an organiza? on to interact harmoniously. Values a(ect their forma? on and development as individuals, and make it easier to reach goals that would be impossible to achieve individually. 9. Values is being itself or the richness of being in as much as it has power to a+ract the cogni? ve and appe ve poten? als of men. 10. Values refer to the major priori? es that one chooses to act on. 11. Values are seen as growing from a person’s experiences. It is, therefore, expected that di(erent experiences would give rise to di(erent values. Process of Valuing Louis Raths, et al. de? ned value or the process of valuing as having seven aspects and made it clear that unless all the seven are present, then what person has chosen is not a value. Values possess criteria which can be divided into three categories: CHOOSING, PRIZING, and ACTING. Hence: C – Choosing 1. To choose freely 2. To choose from alterna? ves 3. To choose alterna? ves a=er considering the consequences of such alterna? ves. P – Prizing 4. To cherish and be happy with the choice 5. To be willing to a? rm the choice publicly A – Ac? ng 6. To actually do something about the choice 7. To act repeatedly to a? rm the choice publicly. In the area of choice, the value must be chosen freely and he person is totally accountable for the choice he made. The choice must consider the consequences of the alterna? ve evident. Essen? al to the valuing process is that the choice must be acted upon and should become part of the life of the person. Finally, the person must be happy with the choice, a choice that enhances the emo? onal and spiritual development of that individual. Values, therefore, are major priori? es that a person choses to act on, that crea? vely enhances his life and the lives of those with whom he associates. Our live are mo? vated and guided by values. In the words of hall, all of life is worth living when we have sincerely commited ourselves top the realiza? on of our goals. Fr. Jaime Bulatao, a Filipino psychologist in his ar? cle â€Å" The Manilenos Mainspring,† gave four large areas of values from the total ? eld of values: 1. Emo? onal closeness and security in a family. In any society, the home always provides love, understanding, acceptance, a place where, no ma+er how far or how wrongly one has wandered he can always return. The Filipinos are noted for manifes? ng close ? es in the family. As many Filipinos would say, â€Å"There is no place like home. † 2. The authority value. This may be de? ned as â€Å"approval by the authority ? gure and by society. † A part of the Filipino tradi? on is that children may marry only with the consent of parents; even when they elope, the parents are s? ll expected to work for reconcilia? on. Authority ? gures must be respected and obeyed within the limits. Authority ? gures are feared and served with awe, but some? mes are not really loved. One looks at authority ? gures for help in obtaining a job and other bene? ts. 3. Economic and social be? erment. This value o=en refers to a desire to raise the standard of living of one’s family, or of one’s hometown. O=en it is repayment of one’s debt of gra? tude to parents and rela? ves. 4. Pa? ence, su? ering, and endurance. This value has been fused with the religious value since it seems that God is called upon when other means fail. It is associated with women more than with men.

Michelangelo Buonarroti :: essays research papers

Michelangelo Buonarotti   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Michelangelo Buonarotti was the most famous artist of the Italian Renaissance, and one of the greatest artists of all time.† (Encyclopedia, pg.398) Michelangelo was a sculpture, architect, and painter. He started to develop his talents, at an early age.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in the small Italian village of Caprese near Florence. (Personal, pg.1) At age 12, Michelangelo became an apprentice painter, to Domenico Ghirlandajo. There after he started sculpting, one of the less popular forms of art during this time period. (Encyclopedia, pg.398)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sculpting was Michelangelo’s one true passion. â€Å"Michelangelo resisted the paintbrush, vowing with his characteristic vehemence that his sole tool was the chisel.† (Sunsite, pg.1) Michelangelo’s statue named â€Å"David† is his most well known. He started creating the statue of â€Å"David† in 1501 and completed his masterpiece in 1504. The statue is carved from marble and stands at a towering 14 feet 3 inches. â€Å"The choice of David was supposed to reflect the power and determination of Republican Florence and was under constant attack from supporters of the usurped Medicis.† (Rubens, pg.1)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Even though Michelangelo loved to sculpt it was not his only artistic talent. Another artistic talent of his was painting. Michelangelo’s largest and most famous paint was that on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It took him 4 years to complete, from 1508 to 1512. (Castela, pg.1)He also painted the â€Å"Last Judgment† over the altar in the chapel. The â€Å"Last Judgment† took 6 years for him to finish, from 1535 and 1541.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Michelangelo was also a magnificent architect. In 1560, he designed a dome to cover a massive opening, on the Sistine Chapel. They began to construct the dome that he had designed in 1560.

Cjs 240 week 2 checkpoint Essay

Juvenile delinquency along with the punishments associated with it seems to be one of the touchier subjects in today’s society. When it comes to juveniles, there are a number of different things that lead them to commit crimes. Things like the level of crime in their community, the bond they have with their parents, and even their economic status all lead juveniles to crime. In order for communities to even start to deter crime among juveniles, they need to start implementing a number of sources. One strategy will not just wipe out juvenile crime, you need a combination of many things to keep children away from crime. When it comes to general deterrence, my opinion is that it starts at home. While a child is growing up, his or her parents play a large role in their child’s concept and view of the world. They also help their children deal with feelings and issues that they come across. A positive up bringing will more than likely create a positive outcome, while a negative up bringing is more likely to produce a negative outcome. If a parent is into illegal behavior, the child is likely to follow in those footsteps. In terms of specific deterrence, this comes from people like social workers. Social workers are there to help the children in desperate need. They produce the positive influence that many from broken homes and poverty so desperately need and do not receive at home. With situational crime prevention, I believe this falls on the community as a whole. It is up to the community to make sure that there is safety. If a community is not safe, crime will breed like wild fire. With all the concepts on juvenile crime prevention, I believe that general deterrence is the one that is going to have the most effect. Parents have to determine the right amount of discipline. Too much discipline can cause your child to turn to illegal activity and the same goes for too little discipline. Too many times have we seen that parents want to be friends and not parents. Fix that problem, and you are one step closer to stop juvenile crime.

Lindsay lohan

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen had planned to spend their 18th birthday on June 13 side by side. But when the much-hyped day arrived, Ashley was left to celebrate without her twin sister, first poolside at the Beverly Hills Hotel and then with a Jaunt to Mexico with two pals. One week later the reason for Mary-Skate's absence became clear: The star, recently the focus of speculation regarding her Increasingly frail-looking body, had been admitted to an undisclosed facility for treatment related to an eating disorder. â€Å"This is a challenge that Mary-Kate has made a decision to face,† says her rep Michael Poignant. â€Å"This is a challenge she will meet. † The admission struck a sad and troubled note for Mary-Kate, who along with Ashley has turned their image as positive, clean-scrubbed role models into a business empire that grossed more than $1 billion in sales last year. Yet to friends, family and even casual onlookers, the subject of Mary-Skate's health has been a so urce of concern In recent months. Although the petite twins (Mary-Kate is 5'2†³; Ashley Is 5'1 have always been slender, Mary-Kate appeared to be painfully thin of late.So widespread was the talk about her weight that the actress herself poked fun at It when the twins hosted the May 15 Saturday Night Live; playing paparazzi photographers, they shouted, â€Å"Mary-Kate, you're so skinny?eat a sandwich! † Sadly, beneath the playfulness was a health crisis. â€Å"There was an intervention,† says someone who has known the Olsen for several years, adding that the twins' father, Dave, and Mary-Skate's therapist committed her to a treatment facility soon after her June 7 high school graduation. â€Å"They finally reached the point where they had to act. They didn't want to find her dead on the floor from not eating. Those close to the star say that there was no single Incident that triggered the decision to seek professional treatment; rather, Mary-Skate's problems had steadily worsened with time. One source says that the change In Mary-Kate, who dates Boston University student David Guttenberg, 21 (his dad Is Trademarks studio expounder Jeffrey Guttenberg), first became evident two years ago. â€Å"She looked different,† says the source. â€Å"She developed circles under her eyes. † Staging the intervention before Mary-Kate turned 18 meant that her parents still had a legal right o seek treatment for her.It isn't the first time her family has tried to aid Mary-Kate, whom close pals call MS. According to one source, after the actress got into a minor car accident about a year and a half ago her father tried motivating her to eat by telling her she couldn't get her black Range Rover back until she gained some weight. Another source says the family hired someone to monitor Mary-Skate's eating. â€Å"Sometimes she was taken out of school to eat,† says a former classmate at Campbell Hall high school. â€Å"During the last year sh e had an adult eating with her most of the time.Everyone knew how skinny she was. † disorder],† says director Dennis Gordon, who helped the twins' spring comedy New York Minute. â€Å"l had a lot of meals with her, and it didn't seem there was anything wrong. † Adds Dir. Drew Pinky, the TV psychologist turned actor who played the twins' father in New York Minute: â€Å"She was the sweetest of the two. But I didn't notice anything. She; hid it well. † Such deception is typical behavior among eating-disorder sufferers, many of whom go to elaborate lengths to disguise their problems. â€Å"Everyone was very angry with Mary-Kate at first,† says a source. She's lied so much and for so long. It's part of the illness. † In fact, both Mary-Kate and Ashley flatly denied such problems in an interview with PEOPLE in April. â€Å"Being in the public eye, you're labeled that you have an eating disorder,† Ashley said at the time. â€Å"You have a drug addiction,† said Mary- Kate. â€Å"We don't have problems! † declared Ashley. The fraternal twins?MS has long been known as the free-spirited one; Ashley as the sophisticated one?have also put on a united front dealing with other recent challenges, including the dismal $13. 7 million box office for New York Minute. We ere really disappointed,† says Gordon. â€Å"They were incredibly mature about it. They said, ‘Okay, I guess we can't open a movie Just yet. Next! ‘ † Showbiz vets since making their debut on Full House at Just 9 months old, the girls have long been praised for their business savvy and solid grounding. But others have wondered if the stress placed on their slender shoulders would eventually take a toll, as it has on other young Hollywood stars (see sidebar). â€Å"The pressures of the entertainment and fashion business are pressures that Mary-Kate and Ashley both have always thrived on,† says a friend. That said, â€Å"ther e's no doubt that the pressure of being successful, running a business and planning for college?that's a lot. † Still, adds the friend, â€Å"l don't think you can draw a straight line between the pressure in nobody's life to this sort of illness. † Says Carolyn Costing, the director of the Eating Disorder Center of California and the Monte Indo Treatment Center in Malibu: â€Å"We look at it like there's a gun, a bullet and the trigger: The gun is biological predisposition, the culture is the bullet and something like the stress of being a celebrity is what pulls the trigger. Not helping matters is the ever-present skinny sweepstakes among young women, many of whom worship stars like Mary-Kate as a source of â€Å"administration,† Shortly after Mary-Skate's appearance at a May premiere, Web surfers on a bulletin board at guru. Com posted messages like, â€Å"I'm convinced she's Ana [a slang term for anorexic]! † Another online follower took notice of Mary -Skate's red string bracelet, which some teens and young adults wear as a signal of their â€Å"Ana† pride and to remind themselves not to eat. (Her rep's response: â€Å"l don't believe that's true [of Mary-Kate]. â€Å")

Calculating the Change in Entropy From Heat of Reaction

Calculating the Change in Entropy From Heat of Reaction The term entropy refers to disorder or chaos in a system. The greater the entropy, the greater the disorder. Entropy exists in physics and chemistry, but can also be said to exist in human organizations or situations. In general, systems tend toward greater entropy; in fact, according to the second law of thermodynamics, the  entropy  of an isolated system can never spontaneously decrease. This example problem demonstrates how to calculate the change in entropy of a systems surroundings following a chemical reaction at constant temperature and pressure. What Change in Entropy Means First, notice you never calculate entropy, S, but rather change in entropy,  ÃŽâ€S. This is a measure of the disorder or randomness in a system. When  ÃŽâ€S is positive it means the surroundings increased entropy. The reaction was exothermic or exergonic (assuming energy can be released in forms besides heat). When heat is released, the energy increases the motion of atoms and molecules, leading to increased disorder. When ΔS is negative it means entropy of the surroundings were reduced or that the surroundings gained order. A negative change in entropy draws heat (endothermic) or energy (endergonic) from the surroundings, which reduces the randomness or chaos. An important point to keep in mind is that the values for  ÃŽâ€S are for  the surroundings! Its a matter of point of view. If you change liquid water into water vapor, entropy increases for the water, even though it decreases for the surroundings. Its even more confusing if you consider a combustion reaction. On the one hand, it seems breaking a fuel into its components would increase disorder, yet the reaction also includes oxygen, which forms other molecules. Entropy Example Calculate the entropy of the surroundings for the following two reactions.a.) C2H8(g) 5 O2(g) → 3 CO2(g) 4H2O(g)ΔH -2045 kJb.) H2O(l) → H2O(g)ΔH 44 kJSolutionThe change in entropy of the surroundings after a chemical reaction at constant pressure and temperature can be expressed by the formulaΔSsurr -ΔH/TwhereΔSsurr is the change in entropy of the surroundings-ΔH is heat of reactionT Absolute Temperature in KelvinReaction aΔSsurr -ΔH/TΔSsurr -(-2045 kJ)/(25 273)**Remember to convert  °C to K**ΔSsurr 2045 kJ/298 KΔSsurr 6.86 kJ/K or 6860 J/KNote the increase in the surrounding entropy since the reaction was exothermic.  An exothermic reaction is indicated by a positive  ÃŽâ€S  value. This means heat was released to the surroundings or that the environment gained energy. This reaction is an example of a combustion reaction. If you recognize this reaction type, you should always expect an exothermic reaction a nd positive change in entropy.Reaction bΔSsurr -ΔH/TΔSsurr -(44 kJ)/298 KΔSsurr -0.15 kJ/K or -150 J/KThis reaction needed energy from the surroundings to proceed and reduced the entropy of the surroundings. A negative  ÃŽâ€S  value indicates an endothermic reaction occurred, which absorbed heat from the surroundings.Answer:The change in entropy of the surroundings of reaction 1 and 2 was 6860 J/K and -150 J/K respectively.

How to Make Goo-Slime Like a Liquid and Solid

How to Make Goo-Slime Like a Liquid and Solid Make squishy nontoxic goo that hardens in your hands when you squeeze it but flows like a liquid when you pour it. Difficulty: Easy Time Required: Minutes Goo Materials All you need for this project is cornstarch and water. You can add food coloring if desired. Feel free to experiment with the amount of water to see how it affects the properties of the goo. 16-oz. box cornstarchWaterFood coloringBowl Lets Make Goo! Empty the box of cornstarch into a bowl.Add 1 1/2 cups of water.Add about 15 drops of food coloring. Its fine without color, too.Mix the goo with your hands.Store goo in a sealed container when youre done using it. If it dries out, simply add more water. Goo Characteristics Goo is a viscoelastic or non-Newtonian fluid, which means its viscosity (how readily it flows) depends on external conditions, such as pressure, shear, or tensile stress. If you pick up goo, it runs through your fingers. If you squeeze it or punch it, it seems to solidify. The force pushes the water around the cornstarch particles, allowing them to mesh together. Afterward, the water flows back to fill in the gaps. Experiment With Other Liquids Water isnt the only liquid you can use to make goo. Try using vegetable oil or a mixture of oil and water instead. This forms a goo with interesting electrical properties. Watch how this type of goo reacts when you place an electrically charged object near it (like a balloon you rubbed on your hair).

The Green Oxidation of Cyclohexanol to Cyclohexanone Lab Report

The Green Oxidation of Cyclohexanol to Cyclohexanone - Lab Report Example KMnO4 and Cr (VI) compounds such as H2CrO4 have been widely used as oxidizing agents in the oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds. However, each of these two reagents has its disadvantages, and chemists are increasingly using reagents containing chlorine in a positive oxidation state such as hypochlorite compounds. Sodium hypochlorite is the reagent chemists most commonly use for this purpose. Sodium hypochlorite has three crucial advantages over Cr (VI) compounds when used to oxidize cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone. Firstly, it has no hazardous waste products in contrast to Cr (VI) oxidations, which yield Cr (III) compounds, which are toxic to aquatic life. Secondly, sodium hypochlorite and its products have no skin or membrane irritation effects other than a negligible amount of chlorine gas, in contrast to Cr (VI) compounds, which are skin and membrane irritants. Thirdly, hypochlorite reagents are considerably cheaper than Cr (VI) compounds (Baird & Cann, 2008, p.67). 8 ml of cyclohexanol and 4 ml of glacial acetic acid were added to a 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask. A thermometer was placed into the flask and used to record the initial temperature. 115 ml of commercial bleach (NaOCl) was obtained in a beaker. The bleach was slowly added to the Erlenmeyer flask using a disposable pipette while slowly stirring the flask. The temperature was maintained between 40oC and 50o using an ice water bath large enough to hold the flask. After adding all the bleach, the mixture was allowed to sit for about 20 minutes. The mixture was continuously stirred during this period. The presence of the oxidizing agent was tested by adding a drop of the solution to a piece of starch-iodide paper. There was no color change indicating that hypochlorite was not present. 4 drops of thymol blue indicator were added to the reaction mixture. The solution turned yellow. 18.4 ml of 6 M sodium hydroxide was added to the reaction mixture until a neutral pH was obtained. This point was indicated by a color change to blue. A simple distillation apparatus was set up, with the receiving container being a 50 ml graduated cylinder. A 250 ml round-bottomed flask was used as the â€Å"still pot†. The mixture was distilled through steam distillation, and a mixture of cyclohexanone and water was obtained in a graduated cylinder. 40 ml of distillate was obtained. B. Isolation and Purification of Cyclohexanone The distillate mixture was placed in an Erlenmeyer flask. 6.8 g of NaCl was slowly added to the 34 ml aqueous layer with stirring in order to reduce the solubility of the cyclohexanone. This enabled it to be extracted completely using ether. The mixture was poured into a separatory funnel. Ether was added to the mixture until a 20 – 25 ml of organic layer was obtained. The separatory funnel was gently shaken with frequent venting. The aqueous and organic layers were left to separate. The aqueous layer was run off into a beaker labeled â€Å"aqueous waste†. The ether solution was poured from the separatory funnel into an Erlenmeyer flask. 3 M sodium hydroxide solution was added to the solution of ether, and the flask was gently shaken with frequent venting. The resulting aqueous layer was
